A Cockapoo is a cross breed between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. This breed takes the best qualities of both of their parts, the intelligent Cocker Spaniel and the loyal and smart Poodle. A Standard Cockapoo ranges in weight from 25-40lbs, though breeding smaller poodles can produce Mini and Toy Cockapoo’s and can range from 7-20lbs.
Cockapoo’s are known to be great companions who are affectionate and quirky. They are often very accepting of other dogs, pets, children and the elderly. However, it is important that young children learn to be respectful and gentle with this breed to avoid any issue. Depending on the breeding process, he/she may be hypoallergenic due to poodle’s heritage. It is important if you have allergies to talk to your breeder to confirm if your pup will be hypoallergenic. Cockapoo’s are generally quite healthy, but can be susceptible to certain genetic disorders. These disorders increase in probability with improper breeding done at puppy mills or by inexperienced breeders. Proper nutrition and exercise is of the utmost importance for your pup to keep them healthy and strong enough to live into old age. The average lifespan of a properly bred Cockapoo is 14-18 years.
Like many poodle hybrids, they need regular grooming. Because of multi layered fur, they are prone to matting especially around the ears and groin. It is very important to brush your Cockapoo several times a week but ideally daily for a healthy coat free of mats. Poodle hybrids with these types of coats can matt quickly and it can go straight to the skin before you know it. Get in touch with an experienced groomer to help you maintain your Cockapoo’s coat and nails. Cockapoo’s generally have silky and wavy coats that come in a variety of different colors.
Cockapoo’s are very intelligent and agile. They train quite quickly and excel at mind games and agility training. Cockapoo’s are incredibly smart and quick to catch on, so the sooner you get to training them the better they will do. Start with small and easy tricks and work your way up as your pup gets better with commands. With intelligence comes boredom, so keep your puppy busy. Crate training can also help to potty train your Cockapoo quickly and without much fuss. They are affection hogs and love to cuddle and lay about with the family, but also love when you throw the ball for them. Because of their size, a Cockapoo can thrive in an apartment so long as daily exercise is maintained. A daily walk can burn a lot of puppy energy off too!
Overall, a Cockapoo is a great addition to any household.
They love being part of a family “pack” and are always eager to please. Do your very best to find a proper breeder with a good reputation when picking your Cockapoo. Poodle Hybrids are very popular and have stimulated puppy mills to overbreed them. The last thing you want is a sick dog prone to cancer and other genetic disorders due to improper breeding. There are many great breeders out there, so get in touch with a good one before you get a Cockapoo life partner!
